Digital media services
Through the services of the Digital Media Officer (Graeme Smith), ArtsIT offers all Arts staff advice or one-on-one training for the use of audio, video, images or Acrobat PDF (digital media).
Training & advice
The Digital Media Officer can provide advice and one-on-one training for the following:
- using images, video and audio for research, lectures and tutorials
- using digital media with PowerPoint presentations
- preparation of media for print or online publication
- using a digital stills camera (Also see Equipment for loan)
- using a digital video camera (Also see Equipment for loan)
- converting analogue media to digital media, e.g. transferring VHS video to DVD (copyright permitting)
- re-mastering DVDs to another format (copyright permitting)
- extracting excerpts from CDs and DVDs (copyright permitting)
- scanning documents or images (Also see Equipment for loan)
- producing PDF files (from print and electronic documents).
- using software for image, video or audio editing, e.g. Photoshop, Fireworks, Media Cleaner Pro, FFmpeg, SoundEdit, Audacity, Acrobat Professional, Revolution
- converting old file types so that they can be re-used by more recent software, e.g. MS Works to FileMaker Pro
- podcasting - how to prepare audio files for podcasting delivery.

- Video and audio taping of presentations & seminars for delivery online.
Project planning & preparation
Before beginning a project that involves the creation or use of digital media you may wish to seek advice on the following:
- purchasing equipment or input devices (cameras, scanners, etc)
- purchasing appropriate software
- appropriate techniques for optimum file creation
- using appropriate file types and compression technologies to ensure longevity and long-term re-use of your media
- organising, cataloguing and storage of digital data files
- image file format conversion (including batch file processes)
- improving your workflow for processes that include repetitive tasks, e.g re-naming files
